![]() ![]() ![]() As parents, I think the book does a fantastic job of showing how even intelligent and highly successful people may be ineffective and often overwhelmed in their role as parents. It also does a great job of depicting how her various family relationships leave her susceptible to her self destructive habits and allow them to continue unabated even after they are exposed. It does an excellent job of getting into the mind of a girl suffering from several forms of mental illness, including anorexia and self-harm (cutting). So, I read it as well and presented her with several topics that we would discuss after we each finished reading.ĭespite the challenging, graphic nature of Wintergirls, it is very well written, and will likely prove enthralling for children with an interest in fantasy or gothic literature. Although we did not think it appropriate reading for a child of her age, she had already read a hefty chunk of the book by the time we saw it. ![]() We encountered this book when our 11-year-old daughter checked it out at the recommendation of her school librarian. ![]()
